I stared down at the mermaid music box as it tinkled away with its haunting melody. My fingers traced the carved filigree of the nightstand the box sat on, the wood cool beneath my touch. A knot tightened in my chest.
We’d located the lighthouse we thought I’d seen in my vision. I flicked my gaze to my phone, biting my lower lip as my stomach clenched. Graymoor Lighthouse.
A shiver snaked down my spine as I stared at the black and white stripes. What would we find there?
I toggled off my phone, pressing my lips together as my fingers curled into fists. I’d been working on channeling the ghost I’d encountered in the music box, and I’d gotten better at it, but seeing her in person at the lighthouse? I wasn’t certain how I would react or the toll it would take on me.
I sucked in a deep breath, trying hard to calm the nerves that crept up and threatened to make me race down the stairs and call off the whole trip.
Light laughter floated from outside my open window. I closed the music box and crossed to my window seat, peering outside at the scene.
Lester loaded a suitcase into the back of the car before accepting an overnight bag from my grandmother.
I pulled the window closed and hurried across my room to grab the music box. Carefully, I put it in my bag before I zipped it shut and hauled it off the bed and onto my shoulder.
With a groan, I wondered if I overpacked. My mind had been a blur as I’d picked hoodies, leggings, and a few puffy skirts. I’d probably tossed in way too much as I tried to slow my mind.
But it had raced all night long, and I’d barely gotten any sleep.
