Cate stood in stunned silence, staring at the blonde woman in the foyer of Dunhaven Castle. Jack’s wife? Her mind wouldn’t allow her to fully accept what the woman had just told her. Was this some sort of trick by the Agency? Had they done this when they’d held Jack captive?
Her lower lip bobbed up and down as her eyebrows pinched together. She tried to form words, but she couldn’t.
Next to her, Marcus recovered more quickly than she could. “Mrs. Reid, how lovely to make your acquaintance. Perhaps you would be more comfortable waiting in the sitting room whilst we fetch your husband.”
“That’d be great,” she said with a click of her tongue before continuing to chomp on her gum.
Marcus motioned toward the double doors as Cate swallowed hard. She stumbled toward the doors and pushed one open. The woman slid past her, gaping around the room as she entered.
Cate’s hand lingered on the doorknob as she stared at the blonde, her eyes still wide. A warm hand wrapped around hers, and the door came closer to her before it slammed in her face.
Fingers touched her chin, twisting her neck sideways. “Catherine, come to your senses. You must find Jack.”
