Maggie crouched in the darkness, holding her breath as she waited. Her heart hammered against her ribs, time seeming to pass far too slowly for her taste.
She licked her lips, her eyes trained on the door. Any second now.
Next to her, the glowing form of a sarcophagus stood as a silent sentinel to what was about to occur.
“Maggie,” Henry whispered from behind her.
She swatted at him. “Shh, quiet.”
He rolled his eyes as she wrinkled her nose at him, shaking her head in a silent warning.
Across the tile floor, Piper and Charlie also remained hidden. Piper shot her a glance, silently questioning as she tapped her watch.
Maggie shrugged.
“She has a point. Your boy is late.”
“He’s not my boy,” Maggie retorted. “And I don’t know what’s keeping him.”
Light shone beyond the door, and a second later it creaked open.
“Shh,” Maggie warned, pressing a finger to her lips.
The shuffle of footsteps sounded as the man entered the cavernous space, the flashlight of his cell phone swinging around. “Emma?”
As the echo of his voice died down, the door creaked open again, and a redheaded woman slipped inside. “Leo?”
Maggie held a finger in the air, her heart hammering.
“Emma?” Leo questioned.
“What are you doing here?” Emma asked.
“You told me to meet you here,” he shot back.
“Uh, no. I got a text that said there was an emergency at the museum, and I needed to report right away.”
Maggie pressed her lips together, holding in a giggle.
“Huh?” Leo asked, scratching his head.
Maggie swished her hand in the air. “Now!” she hissed.
