Cate traced a finger over the black print on the paper as though it would make the words more real. She squeezed her eyes shut, realizing those few sentences had altered her life.

She blew out a long breath, stuffing the papers into a folder and flicking it closed. She tossed it onto the coffee table in front of her.

She pursed her lips, studying the cold hearth in front of her as she pulled her legs up and nestled into the supple leather of the library’s armchair.
She flicked her gaze to the other empty chair in the room, staring at it for a moment before she let her eyes slide closed.
