The dried tears made the skin of her cheeks pinch as the sleepy city of Brussels rolled past her window. A scaly hand wrapped around hers and squeezed.
“I’m sorry, Paige,” Dewey whispered.
She squeezed her eyes closed, blocking out the view without even turning toward him. She feared another outburst of sobs if she made eye contact. If she had any tears left to cry.
The tiny paw slid away from her hand. She forced her eyes open and shifted her gaze to her tiny partner.
“Thanks, buddy,” she said with a sniffle. “I wasn’t ignoring you, I just…”
She bit into her lower lip hard as her eyes welled with tears again.
“We’ll find another way,” Dewey promised. “As soon as we get back, I know Ronnie will approve a research trip to follow up on your ancestry.”
Drucinda eyed them from the driver’s seat through the rearview mirror. “I think that’s wise, little man, though I would advise we return to Paris’s library and discuss it.”
Paige pinched her features and snapped her gaze to Drucinda. “You really don’t trust Ronnie?”
