The shadowy figure raced away from the sprawling castle’s dark facade. The crescent moon overhead barely lit the form as it crossed the surrounding hills. Only the massive gemstones caught the light as they fled from Dunhaven Castle with the family’s heirloom jewels.

Lady Catherine Kensie bit her lower lip as she tugged her cardigan tighter against the chilly December weather, imagining the scene that occurred on a dark winter’s night almost a century ago. She chuckled to herself as she realized it probably happened nothing like that.

“What do you think, boys?” she asked her two furry friends, Riley and Bailey, who sniffed a set of bushes edging the path. “Is that how the theft occurred?”

Cate glanced up at the castle rising above her, blocking the afternoon sun. A shiver passed through Cate as the wind blew past her. She shoved her hands in her pockets, her shoulders rising toward her ears.

“Yikes, come on, boys! It’s getting too cold out here!”

She entered through the kitchen, greeting Mrs. Fraser who was busy preparing dinner for the evening.

“Brr, it’s cold out there!” Cate said as she ushered the dogs into the room.

“Aye, it is. And we haven’t even gotten to real winter yet!”

“I hope Molly packed warm clothes. It’ll be quite a change for her coming from the States.”

Mrs. Fraser set out utensils on Cate’s tray. “Less than a week. I bet she’s excited.”

“She is,” Cate answered. “There are more and more exclamation points with every email.”

Mrs. Fraser wiped her hands on her apron before she tugged open the oven’s door. “Heading up to work on your book?”

“Yes. I’m going to try to get a few paragraphs in before dinner.”

“Good luck, Lady Cate!” Mrs. Fraser called as Cate ushered the two dogs up to the library, where she planned to complete work on her book before dinner.

Cate plopped into the desk’s chair and tugged her laptop open before she pulled her notebook over. She smiled as she perused her notes, most of which consisted of information from when she’d met her ancestors, Randolph and Victoria MacKenzie, while time traveling with her estate manager, Jack Reid, to solve a centuries-old murder.

With a deep breath, she set the notebook aside and typed up a first draft of her experiences. She closed her laptop as Mrs. Fraser flitted into the room and slid her dinner tray onto the coffee table across the room.

After thanking her housekeeper for the meal delivery, she sank into the supple leather of the armchair near the fireplace. Flames danced inside, warming the two dogs napping nearby.

Cate stared down at the manila folder on the coffee table as she pulled her tray onto her lap. She tugged it onto the chair’s arm and flicked it open. A set of articles from Isla Campbell, the town’s librarian and historical society president, stared back at her.

She stared at the thick black words making up the headline: THEFT AT DUNHAVEN CASTLE.
