My eyes slid sideways toward my enigmatic grandmother as we made our return trip home. She’d promised me another story, this one in Scotland and directly relating to the music box I’d fallen in love with when I’d arrived at Thornwood Manor.
Supposedly, the music box had come from one of Emma’s adventures. But I was starting to suspect Emma wasn’t a friend of my grandmother’s but was actually my grandmother herself.
I hadn’t said anything to her yet about my idea. I wondered if maybe she’d laugh at me. But more than that, I wondered why, if she was Emma, why would she have kept it from me.
Why not just say she was the one who had all these weird experiences.
Maybe she thought I’d laugh at her.
After what she’d told me about how many spirits Emma and Rose had helped so far, I wouldn’t laugh. In fact, I’d be in awe if it was her who had done all this. She must have lived a really interesting life.
Far more interesting than what I’d lived so far, growing up in an area that prized fitting into a mold rather than being unique.
As much as I missed my parents, coming to live with my grandmother had been a blessing in disguise.
