She pushed off the couch, heading to the kitchen for a knife. She sliced open the brown packing tape sealing the box. Packing material filled the inside. Maggie used the knife to push the material around until an object revealed itself.
A tiny gold fleck gleamed from beneath the packing peanuts. Maggie pushed more peanuts away, some of them spilling over the side of the box. She peered inside at the curious object, adorned in red, green, and blue gems.
With her thumb and index finger, Maggie picked the bejeweled piece out of the box. She rotated the object in her hand, studying it from all angles. She held a gem-encrusted scarab beetle, if she remembered her history correctly. Who would send her this, she wondered?
She dug into the box again, searching for anything else. At the bottom, she found an envelope bearing her name. She ripped it open and pulled out the note.
Maggie—I have little time to explain. I have found something…something big. This little scarab is the key to the greatest archaeological find of our time. I can’t say more. I don’t want to endanger your life, and I need to lay low for a while. The stakes are high.
